With over 20 years of experience at Rex Rooter, we understand the complications of plumbing.
We work at both improving our quality of service and informing our customers about preventing plumbing problems before they start!
The following tips are personal favorites. They can save you $$ MONEY $$ in plumbing repairs, so keep this reference sheet handy.
- Emergency Main Water Supply Valve - You and your family need to know where the shut off for the main water supply for the house is located and how to use it.
Do not wait to find it during an emergency while your house is flooding from a water supply leak.
- Emergency Angle Stop Shut Off – Everyone in the house should know how to use them. Even a child can prevent a lot of damage
if they know how to shut off the water flow to a faucet, toilet, etc.
- Garbage Disposer - To clean the disposer and sharpen blades, fill the garbage disposer full of ice and pour a ¼ cup of bleach into the disposer.
Turn on cold water into the disposer and turn it on. The ice will sharpen the blades and the bleach will sanitize the inside of the disposer.
- Garbage Disposer – Before you call a plumber to repair your garbage disposer, press the red button on the bottom and check the breaker box.
If the disposer is jammed with debris, the red button will pop out again and it may need a plumber to repair it.
- Leak Prevention - Keep all drains clear of clutter under the sinks, so any future water leaks can be visible and repaired before any water damage can occur.
Be careful not to place bottles and boxes around drains so they can not fall against the drain and cause a leak.
- Toilet – Listen for water running at the toilet when not in use. This could be a sign of a leaky tank flapper and can waste water, costing you money.
- Washing Machine – Check your washing machine hoses for wear yearly. Look for swollen hoses, cracks and dripping fittings. It is cheaper to replace hoses than to cause a major water leak with damage.
- Water Heater – Inspect the area around the water heater for signs of water leaks. Look for signs of rust on the tank and listen for sound of water dripping.
If you hear popping noises coming from the tank while it is heating, it is close to failing due to hard water buildup inside. Replace the water heater ASAP!
