Water Heater Repair and Replacement

Nearly every home in Ventura has a water heater. When is the last time you inspected it for leaks? It is probably the last thing you would think of. You don’t realize how many times each you use hot water - bathing, dishes, laundry, washing hands, cooking, etc. Although many homes have high quality water heaters installed, the constant workload causes them to wear down, and a high quality water heater will typically last up to 10 years, but some can fail much earlier than that. If your water heater is more than 5 years old you should pay attention to its performance because it may experience difficulties.

Water Heater Problems

No Hot Water - Immediately look for signs water around the water heater. A leak can go undetected for a very long time causing water damage and extra expense. There are many different reasons why this could be happening. Our experienced plumbing technician can diagnose the problem and repair or replace the water heater safely and efficiently. There are also many safety issues to consider before trying it yourself. All water heaters are either natural gas or electrical. Both have many dangers to consider, a leaking gas valve or flex can cause explosive hazard. A vent that is not installed correctly can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. If a temperature and pressure valve is not installed properly or fails, it can flood a area with scalding hot water!  It is very important to always call a professional and never tamper with any safety device or control without proper training.

Low Hot Water Levels

Many times the water heater is not sized correctly with the amount of use that is demanded of it. Perhaps a mistake was made in the past with installation decisions of a previous plumber, homeowner or handyman. We know how important it is to determine the best size or model based on the use and size of the household. Water Heater Questions

Why does it take so long to get hot water to a shower?

Many times it is the distance between the water heater and the shower. We can prevent the waste of water and save you some money. We can increase the time it takes for hot water, by installing technology that will address these issues.

Why does it take so long to reheat the water?

There is sediment in water that hardens naturally when heated inside a tank. That sediment can deposit in the bottom of a water heater which displaces the amount of hot water available. Sometimes a customer will find this sediment in a kitchen or lavatory sink during hot water use. It is usually time to replace the water heater when sediment is found in the hot water.

Why is there not enough hot water?

Sometimes, it is as easy as turning the water temperature up to the proper setting. But take caution in doing so yourself, it may have a failed control and you may scald someone. Water heaters have a amount of available hot water based upon the size and model. If a house has a deep soaker bath tub that holds 75 gallons, a 40 or 50 gallon water heater will not have enough water to fill it. If household is larger than 4 people, there simply may not be enough volume of water to supply everyone with the existing size. A tankless water heater is a great choice for extra large families. A deep soaker tub can be filled completely, while showering and doing laundry, all at the same time! Ask our plumber about your options that best meet your water usage.

Should I drain my water heater?

It has been our experience through draining many water heaters for replacement, that draining the water heater is not necessary. The sediment has hardened inside the tank preventing any sizable amount from draining.

The pilot light keeps going out?

Hard water sediment builds up inside the bottom of the water heater. Once the hardened sediment rises past the control valve sensor inside the tank, the control can not properly work causing failure of the system. In most cases the control valve will shut down the pilot temporally or permanently and the pilot will not light! Our experienced plumber will diagnose the problem and recommend the correct repair procedure.

Why is water leaking from an open pipe leading from water heater?

Your water heater has a temperature and pressure relief valve installed. When the temperature or the hot water pressure is too high in the tank, the valve releases the water. This must be repaired immediately to prevent flooding or water damage. There are many reasons why this could be happening. Sometimes, it is just a failed valve to be replaced on the water heater. Another cause could be excessively high pressure in the water supply to the house. This can be remedied by installing a pressure reducing valve on the house water pressure.

A Takagi OS tankless water heaters can be installed outside at a location out of the way, but accessible to service in the future.  All tankless units must be serviced annually.

Saves Money

Lower your energy bills by not wasting gas on storing hot water in a tank. A tankless water heater is highly efficient at heating only the water that is being used.
